About Edsel Cars

The Edsel brand, a discontinued division of the Ford Motor Company, was in production for a brief period from 1958 to 1960. Named after Edsel Ford, the son of the company's founder, Henry Ford, the Edsel was an ambitious project aimed at capturing additional market share from competitors like Chrysler and General Motors. The Edsel was positioned as a fourth brand under the Lincoln-Mercury Division, sharing its price range with Mercury and its body design with both Mercury and Ford.

History of Edsel

Edsel was the first new brand introduced by an American automaker since the launch of Mercury in 1939 and Continental in 1956. The latter was eventually merged into Lincoln after 1957. In the run-up to its release, Ford heavily marketed Edsels as the cars of the future, investing heavily in an advertising campaign. Despite introducing several advanced features for its price segment in 1958, the Edsel's launch is often remembered as a commercial failure.

Edsel's Commercial Failure

The Edsel was launched during a recession, which severely impacted the sales of medium-priced cars. The brand was criticized for being overhyped, unattractive, and of low quality. Its distinctive vertical grille was often compared to a horse collar. After losing over $250 million on the development, manufacturing, and marketing of the Edsel, Ford discontinued the brand before 1960.

Edsel Model Cars

Despite its commercial failure, the Edsel brand produced several models during its short lifespan. These include the Ranger, Corsair, Roundup, Villager, and Bermuda. Each model had its unique features and design elements.

Edsel Toy Cars

Despite the brand's discontinuation, Edsel model cars and toy cars remain popular among collectors. These miniature replicas capture the unique design and features of the original Edsel cars, serving as a reminder of a unique chapter in the history of the American automobile industry.
