About Ranger Cars

The Ranger brand, a subsidiary of General Motors, was a prominent automobile manufacturer from 1968 to 1978. The brand was primarily active in three main markets, with its original automobile being marketed as "South Africa's Own Car". The first Ranger cars were built in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, from 1968 to 1973. The European model range was primarily sold in Belgium and Switzerland, with production taking place in Antwerp, Belgium, by General Motors Continental SA from 1970 to 1978. General Motors Suisse SA also produced Rangers in Biel-Bienne, Switzerland, from 1970 until the factory's closure in 1975. A few Rangers were also sold in the Netherlands.

The Ranger Car Design

The design of Ranger cars during this period was a unique blend of parts from other General Motors products. The body shell was similar to the Opel Rekord, but it featured a Vauxhall Victor FD grille. The internal parts were sourced from various large Vauxhalls and Holdens. However, the European Rangers had very little to differentiate them from Opels. As the second generation cars became even closer to models marketed by Chevrolet in South Africa and Opel in Europe, the Ranger brand was deemed irrelevant and subsequently discontinued.

The Ranger B Model

The Ranger B model was exclusively built in Antwerp and sold only in a few select European markets. A 1972 Belgian road test of the Ranger 2500 even begins by calling the existence of the Ranger brand hard to explain. Despite this, the Ranger B model has become a classic in the automobile world, appreciated by car enthusiasts and collectors alike.
