Mercury Corporation: A Journey from Aircraft to Automobiles
Mercury Corporation, a renowned name in the automobile industry, has a rich history that dates back to 1920. Originally established as an aircraft manufacturer in Hammondsport, New York, the company initially sold surplus parts for Curtiss JN-4 aircraft flown after World War I. As the supply of parts dwindled, Mercury began manufacturing various aircraft components, including radios and dirigible gondolas.
In 1927, the company rebranded itself as Mercury Aircraft under the leadership of Joseph F. Meade, Sr. and Harvey Mummert. The following year, Mercury introduced the T-2 Mercury Chic, a two-place all-metal aircraft, priced at $3500. The company's close relationship with Curtiss aircraft's home led to the creation of a replica of the 1908 AEA June Bug in 1976, which was flown in airshows across the country.
Today, Mercury Corporation operates globally, manufacturing custom and mass-production components. However, it is best known for its Mercury model cars, which have become a symbol of the company's innovation and commitment to quality.
