About McLaren
McLaren Racing Limited, a British motor racing team, is renowned for its significant contributions to the world of Formula One. Established in 1963 by Bruce McLaren, the team has a rich history of success, including 183 race victories, 12 Drivers' Championships, and 8 Constructors' Championships. McLaren's success extends beyond Formula One, with a history of competing in American open wheel racing and sports car racing championships. Today, McLaren is a subsidiary of the McLaren Group, which owns a majority of the team.
McLaren's History
The team's first Grand Prix victory came in 1968 at the Belgian Grand Prix. However, their initial success was in the Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am), which they dominated from 1967 to 1971. After the unfortunate death of Bruce McLaren in 1970, Teddy Mayer took over and led the team to their first Formula One Constructors' Championship in 1974. The team continued to thrive under the leadership of Ron Dennis, who took over as team principal in 1981. Under his guidance, the team won seven Drivers' Championships and six Constructors' Championships.
McLaren's Evolution
McLaren has seen several changes over the years, including engine suppliers and team principals. In 2013, they announced a switch to Honda engines, replacing Mercedes-Benz. However, in 2017, they agreed on an engine supply with Renault until 2020. As of 2021, McLaren is using Mercedes-Benz engines again. The team has also expanded its racing activities, entering the electric off-road racing series Extreme E in 2022, and joining Formula E in the 2022–23 season.
